19-2000, also written as 19/2000, is a song by Gorillaz and the second single and eleventh track from their first studio album, Gorillaz. The single was released on 25 June 2001 in the United Kingdom.
The lead vocals from the song's chorus are provided by Noodle, voiced by Miho Hatori. It also features musicians and spouses Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz, co-founders of American new wave band Tom Tom Club, with Tina providing backing vocals for the chorus and Chris providing bongos.
Information[]
A marked departure from their previous rap-driven hit, this was, in its 'Soulchild Remix' incarnation (the only version to get major radio airplay in the UK and Europe) three ecstatic minutes of pure pop. Whilst not as big a hit as Clint Eastwood, the single charted well in the UK and sold consistently for weeks. B-sides Left Hand Suzuki Method and Hip Albatross showed the more experimental and less immediate side of Gorillaz. Overall, this single sustained the momentum that Clint Eastwood had built up, leading to the reissue of the debut LP in mainland Europe, the UK and Asia to include what had become the de facto 'single version' of the song.
The standard version of the song was particularly successful in New Zealand, where it reached number one for a week in September 2001.
Recording[]
According to the band on the Rise of the Ogre autobiography, the riff for the keyboard was sampled off 2-D's alarm clock and then looped, while the lyrics were intentionally written to be very abstract, with Murdoc describing them as "a fine line between 'clever' and 'stupid'".[2] In addition, the song also samples the drums from the beginning section of 'If I Needed Someone', a cover of The BeatlesW recorded by Pennsylvanian psychedelic rock band Bit 'A Sweet from their sole studio album, Hypnotic I.
Russel stated that Dan the Automator sent some tracks over to Tina Weymouth, who recorded her vocals and sent them back in a CD, which were then blended within the song and mixed in with Noodle and Miho's vocals.[2]
According to Murdoc, he wrote the song at the turn of the millennium, so he needed a title that reflected that change. In the end, he chose '19-2000' over simply 'Millennium', which would have been "a shit name for a song".[3]
| “ | Also, you can see what we did the title, right. 1998, 1999, 19-2000. See? | „ |

Music Video[]
- Main Article: 19-2000/Music Video
The music video for 19-2000 was released on television in the same day as the single on the 25th of June 2001. It was directed by Jamie Hewlett and Pete Candeland and was animated both in 2-D and 3-D by Passion Pictures.
In the music video, Noodle, Murdoc, 2-D, and Russel take the Geep out for a drive through a long and twisting highway in a desert. Their journey includes conquering a vertical loop, jumping over a gap in the road, and being pursued by a UFO. Eventually, they face a colossal moose, which Murdoc attempts to obliterate with a pair of missiles but which are redirected towards the Geep by its sneeze. The resulting explosion sends the vehicle skidding down the road and leaves the band members covered in black ash.
Lyrics[]
[2-D]
The world is spinning too fast
I'm buying lead Nike shoes
To keep myself tethered
To the days I've tried to lose
My mama said to slow down
You must make your own shoes
Stop dancing to the music
Of Gorillaz in a happy mood
[2-D]
(Body movin') Keep a mild groove on
(Keep a mild groove on)
They do the bump
They do the bump
They do the bump
Body movin'
They do the bump
They do the bump
They do the bump
They do the bump
[Noodle & Miho]
Here you go!
Get the cool!
Get the cool shoeshine!
Get the cool!
Get the cool shoeshine!
Get the cool!
Get the cool shoeshine!
Get the cool!
Get the cool shoeshine!
[2-D]
There's a monkey in the jungle
Watching a vapour trail
Caught up in the conflict
Between his brain and his tail
(Body movin')
And if time's elimination
(They do the bump)
Then we've got nothing to lose
(They do the bump)
Please repeat the message
(They do the bump)
It's the music that we choose
(They do the bump)
(Body movin') Keep a mild groove on
(Keep a mild groove on)
They do the bump
They do the bump
They do the bump
Body movin'
They do the bump
They do the bump
They do the bump
Okay we'll bring it down and we'll come back out
[Noodle & Miho]
Get the cool!
Get the cool shoeshine!
Get the cool!
Get the cool shoeshine!
Get the cool!
Get the cool shoeshine!
Get the cool!
Get the cool shoeshine!

They do the bump
They do the bump
They do the bump
