Don't get lost in heaven, they got locks on the gate

Don't Get Lost In Heaven (occasionally shortened to Don't Get Lost…) is the fourteenth track on Gorillaz' 2005 album, Demon Days.

The song features the London Community Gospel Choir doing the vocals on the chorus.

Information[]

In Rise of the Ogre, this track is described as an homage to Brian WilsonW's vocal arrangements and the Beach BoysW' signature layered choral sound.[1]

This is a little slice of West Coast sun-soaked harmony. The part this plays is as a transition into a more optimistic exit for the album. Like coming up for air.
~ Russel
For the orchestrated harmony we drafted in London Community Gospel Choir. This works as a prelude or link to the next track. The message is ‘Don't get lost in the fog’. Again, its saying, ‘be aware of what’s at stake when you lose sight of the goal’.
~ Noodle

Lyrics[]

Got off a plane to the countryside
I drove to the mountain and, holding the ground
There was crack on a corner and someone dead
And fire coming out of the monkey's head

Don't get lost in heaven, they got locks on the gate
Don't go over the edge, you'll make a big mistake

Put me in a cab to suburbia
I just took a line but I wasn't with you
There was more of it there, when I got back home
But you'd left me, you don't know my soul

You're a whole bad mistake, yeah, you're a whole one

Don't get lost in heaven, they got locks on the gate
Don't go over the edge, you'll make a big mistake

You'll make a big mistake. Aaaaaaahhhh
You'll make a big mistake. Aaaaaaahhhh
You'll make a big mistake. Aaaaaaahhhh
You'll make a big mistake. Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhh...

  • At some point before its release, this track was simply titled "Heaven".[2]
  • Prior to the version of the song found in Demon Days, the song originally had a comedic stereotypical "hillbilly" feel to it that was accompanied by banjo instrumentals. This version of the song was released in the D-Sides album of songs that did not have large scale releases like the hit singles in the Demon Days album.
  • The photo for the song, depicting the Nigerian 'debt collectors', was taken by a Brazilian photographer and provided by Scamorama.[3]
  • This song was originally listed as "Don't Get Lost In Heaven - Original Demo Version" but the demo got replaced by this track.
  • With the exception of "Intro", this is the only song from Demon Days without an official instrumental, likely due to it being the last track finished for the album as a result of changes made from the demo version.
