Hallelujah money

(Cross the chemtrail sun)

Hallelujah Money is a song by Gorillaz and the nineteenth track on their fifth studio album, Humanz. It was the first song released by Gorillaz in 2017. Vocals for Hallelujah Money were provided by artist Benjamin Clementine. The song was released on the eve of the Inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald TrumpW, on 19 January 2017.

Background Information[]

When a buissness man becomes the leader of the free world, a song like "Hallelujah Money" is quite appropriate as an inauguration theme.
~ Jamie Hewlett

Damon Albarn has stated that "Hallelujah Money" was originally imagined as a fictitious song that was "ment to be something sung at the imaginary inauguration of Donald Trump". At the time of writing Humanz, an inauguration, let alone a presidential win by Donald Trump was deemed highly unlikely. When Donald Trump did happen to win, Albarn and Hewlett decided to release the track on his inauguration day, fufilling the song's original purpose. They also mentionned that the track would've most likely not have been released on that day if Democratic candidate Hillary ClintonW had won the presidential election. [1]

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1: Benjamin Clementine]
Here is our tree
That primitively grows
And when you go to bed
Scarecrows from the far east
Come to eat its tender fruits
And I thought the best way to perfect our tree
Is by building walls
Walls like unicorns
In full glory and galore
And even stronger
Than the walls of Jericho
Be glad then my friend
That in a few, we shall reap abundantly
What we have always dreamt of having
Enough of the starving
It is love, that is the root of all evil
But not our tree
And thank you, my friend
For trusting me

[Chorus: Benjamin Clementine & (The Humanz Choir)]
Hallelujah
(Hallelujah)
Hallelujah money
(Cross the chemtrail sun)
Hallelujah money
(Hallelujah money)
Hallelujah money
(Hallelujah money)
Hmmm
Hallelujah money
(Hallelujah)
Hallelujah money
(Oooh)

[Verse 2: 2-D]
How will we know?
When the morning comes
We are still humanz
How will we know?
How will we dream?
How will we love?
How will we know?

[Interlude: Benjamin Clementine]
Don't worry, my friend
If this be the end, then so shall it be
Until we say so, nothing will move
Ah, don't worry
It's not against our morals
It's legally tender
Touch, my friend
What the whole world
And whole beasts of nations desire
Power

[Bridge 2: 2-D]
When the morning comes
We are still human
How will we know?
How will we dream?
How will we love?
How will we know?

[Chorus: Benjamin Clementine & (The Humanz Choir)]
(Hallelujah money)
Hallelujah money
(Cross the chemtrail sun)
Hallelujah money
(Hallelujah money)
Hmmm
Hallelujah money
(Hallelujah money)
Hallelujah money
(Oooh)
Hallelujah money
Hallelujah money
Hallelujah

Hallelujah money!
