iTunes Session is a live extended play by English virtual band Gorillaz. It was released exclusively on iTunesW, as the title suggests, on 22 October 2010.

Recording Information[]

The EP was recorded at an AppleW iTunes recording studio in New York City on 10 April 2010 after the band's CoachellaW performance in promotion of the upcoming Escape To Plastic Beach World Tour. It features eight live renditions of songs by Gorillaz from the albums Gorillaz, Demon Days and Plastic Beach, along with an interview track starring Murdoc and 2-D. The songs re-recorded during this session were as follows: Clint Eastwood, Dirty Harry, Feel Good Inc., Kids With Guns, Stylo, Glitter Freeze, On Melancholy Hill and Rhinestone Eyes.

For some of the guest collaborations on the songs re-recorded for the EP, such as Del The Funky Homosapien on Clint Eastwood or Bootie Brown on Dirty Harry, their original recordings from their respective studio versions were used instead of them recording new audio.

Virtual Band Backstory[]

According to the band's interview on the Dawn Of The Ogre unofficial biography, the songs were recorded by Damon Albarn's "tribute band", with musicians such as Cass Browne, Paul Simonon, Mick Jones, Mike Smith and the others after Murdoc had been deported from California for not having a work visa.

After I was deported from Cali for not having a work visa we didn’t really have a choice but to let big bad Damo and his Clash scraps lick the residue off our plates. Talk shows, in the papers, a live EP! They were everywhere! Grudges aside, I’ve gotta hand it to them, this is probably my favourite collection of Gorillaz covers done by a tribute band to date. These sessions remind me a lot of what we did for the Demon Detour, back in 2005, with in-studio live recordings of our tracks. Great stuff.

The interview was recorded a few months later when an iTunes representative was sent to Plastic Beach for the digital release.

Really makes you wonder why they didn’t just come over to the island and record us playing from here, we have a million-dollar mansion and an in-house studio! I bet it’s all those publicists with their click-baiting, making everyone think Damon’s the star. I don’t think so! He can hog the stage and the TV outings as much as he likes, but when it comes to claiming the medals, he needs to step aside. The interview was conducted by a very unenthusiastic woman, with very little to say, on the patio of Plastic Beach.
