Barrington DeVaughn Hendricks (b. October 22, 1989) better known as JPEGMafia, is an American rapper, singer and producer based in Los Angeles, California.
Role in Gorillaz[]
JPEGMafia, alongside Japanese indie rock band CHAI, provided vocals for the track MLS from Gorillaz' seventh studio album Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez. He later appeared in a hologram form on Song Machine Live.
Musical career[]
Hendricks began his career out of an interest in music production that he had since learning the art of sampling at the age of 15. He started releasing music while stationed in Japan during his service in the US military, under the name Devon Hendryx. He changed his stage name to JPEGMafia after moving to Baltimore in 2015, when he would release his mixtape Communist Slow Jams in April. He released the mixtape Darkskin Manson a month later, inspired by the Freddy Gray protests that were happening in Baltimore at the time. His debut studio album, Black Ben Carson was released in 2016 through the record label Deathbomb Arc. His second studio album, Veteran, was released in 2018 and was followed up by All My Heroes Are Cornballs in 2019 and LP! In 2021. In 2023, he released his collaborative studio album SCARING THE HOES with fellow Gorillaz collaborator Danny Brown. In 2024, he released his fifth studio album I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU.
