Leslie McGregor "Leee" John (b. June 23 1957) is a British soul singer and actor born in Hackney, London best known as the lead singer of the 80's R&B band Imagination.
Role in Gorillaz[]
Leee John provided vocals for the track The Lost Chord from Gorillaz's seventh studio album Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez. He appeared in its music video as a kaiju sea monster that destroys Plastic Beach. He also made an appearance on Song Machine Live and joined Gorillaz on Song Machine Tour.
Musical career[]
John is best known as the lead singer of the '80s soul band Imagination. He was previously a backup vocalist for bands such as The Velvelettes, The Delftonics, The Elgins and Chairmen of The Board.
After forming a songwriting duo with Ashley Ingram, they agreed to start a band of their own, initially forming a band called Fizzz before auditioning for Midnight Express and eventually forming Imagination in 1981 and rising to fame after releasing Body Talk. They would then go on to release '80s R&B hits “In and Out of Love” and “Flashback” for their debut album Body Talk. Their second album “In The Heat of The Night” produced their biggest hit “Just An Illusion”, released in 1982. They would continue to release many hit albums and singles throughout the '80s until the early '90s, and would release a reunion album in 2016.
