This is a breakfast clubW!

Man Research (Clapper) is the sixth track on Gorillaz' 2001 album Gorillaz.

Recording[]

Russel Hobbs mentioned that the track had a real hallucinogenic quality to it. Murdoc added to this comment that it sounded as if someone had been at the ether bottle that day.

2-D layered up a collage of vocals which created his own call-and-response anthem, bouncing between jubilant falsetto and a knackered-out croak.

The song opened on a backdrop of crickets and an intro reminiscent of The ClashW's "Straight To HellW" and then went into the middle of a swampy lysergic dub.[1]

Lyrics[]

This is a breakfast club!

Bring me coffee in the know
See the taboo on the sand
I got sunshine, I got you, aae, yae, yae yae
I can’t hear nothin’ life can do
(Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh)

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Trivia[]

  • The song samples "In the Hall Of The Mountain Queen" by Raymond Scott.
  • It is simply addressed to as "Man Research" on the Live at the Forum, 2001 LP.
  • This song matches perfectly with the DoYaThing music video in a number of ways.
  • The Spacemonkeyz Remix of the song is called Monkey Racket.
  • Clint Eastwood transitions into this song, but only on specific CDs as on other CDs the last second is cut for some reason.
  • The beginning of the song features a high pitch electronic noise, that can be heard throughout the song. A very similar noise is used for the Robot creature in the 1975 Doctor WhoW episode “The Sontaran ExperimentW”. In this episode, the main villain, the Sontaran “Styre”, focuses on experimenting on human test subjects. This coincidentally also connects to the name of this song “Man Research”.
