Martina Gillian Topley-Bird (b. May 7, 1975) is an English vocalist and songwriter who first gained fame as the featured female vocalist on trip hop pioneer Tricky's debut album, Maxinquaye.
Role in Gorillaz[]
Martina Topley-Bird, alongside with Roots Manuva, provided vocals for the track All Alone from Gorillaz' second studio album, Demon Days. She also was featured in the unreleased Gorillaz song Snakes And Ladders, which she later finished and released as Soldier Boy, featuring Gorillaz and Roots Manuva. Topley-Bird also joined Gorillaz on Demon Days Live.
Musical Career[]
Topley-Bird was first featured on trip hop pioneer Tricky's debut album, Maxinquaye. She also worked with him on his subsequent albums Nearly God and Pre-Millennium Tension. In 2003, Topley-Bird released her debut solo album, Quixotic and was followed by Anything, The Blue God, Some Place Simple and Forever I Wait. She has also collaborated with Gorillaz, Mark Lanegan, Diplo and Massive Attack. Her song Sandpaper Kisses was covered by Stephen Marley and sampled by such artists as Berry Weight and The Weeknd.
