"Gorillaz 卷土重来"

Numéro: Hello Noodle, long time no see. Please tell our readers how you are doing.
Noodle: I'm fine, thank you. As for the current situation... Well, let me first summarise the major event that happened before. The last news about me was probably my escape to Plastic Beach, an island made of ocean trash that stunk so much it even covered the body odour of Murdoc. So, as you can imagine, things aren't too bad anymore. Somehow I drifted to the coast of Japan, where I made a living by diving for pearls, but I accidentally released an ancient monster from inside a pearl clam.  I spent the next four years tracking it through Tokyo's underground world, caught it, and cut off its head. After that, I quickly sent myself to London via Fedex express service and moved into a new house. And then there’s the conversation I’m having with you right now.

It seems that you have gone through a lot of hardships after the attack on Plastic Beach. Have you fully recovered now? How did this help you grow? Have you become stronger?
It’s not like I have gone through a lot of hardships. Everyone has something they have to overcome, right? Stronger? For sure, every war makes you more powerful. Unless you are killed, that wouldn't work.
Yes, after several months of training, I have recovered. I'm writing songs, doing hot yoga, studying quantum physics, and diving into the depths of the human psyche to find the meaning of existence. I also play a lot of online games. My specialty is EatMyRocketLauncher.

Gorillaz has been quiet for a while, what have you guys been up to?
Living. People think that if you are not recording then you are not creating. But you can't live in a studio. Only the troubles of the real world can give you a reason to express yourself. It is like this for all art. The good thing for Gorillaz is that chaos seems to find us very easily.

Please share with us something about this photo shoot. Seems like the styling is a bit different from your previous style, has your personal style changed along the years? How would you describe your style now?
Yes, the changes are huge. I mean, I was only a kid back then, so naturally my style has changed. Not just because I'm older, but because the world itself is different. So much has happened in five years, the way young women view the world has changed. At the moment I'm kind of mixing utility wear and urban camouflage. I love the A1 flight jacket. Any clothes that have a purpose, that mean something like they used to. Hence all the vintage utility stuff people are into. And the heavy print patterns are inspired by dazzle camouflage, like they used on old battleships. Today the world is so confusing and saturated and full of distractions, if you want to blend in, wear something that stands out. That's the idea behind it, I think.

I know you like fashion, are you gonna be in any fashion projects in the near future?
Of course, at least I hope so. I really want to design shoes and have been thinking about it for a long time. It's a little early to tell, but I do have some good ideas.

Who's your favourite designer? How do you see fashion nowadays?
I have so many favorite designers that I can’t just tell you one name that I like. My favorites include Jivomir Domoustcheiv, KTZ, Irene SJ Yu, and Phiney Pet. We hang out sometimes, she's cool. Actually, right now I'm wearing some creepers she designed.
Fashion today? It's instant. It used to be that you'd see something on the runway, then maybe months later you'd be able to buy it in a shop. Now, you can buy stuff straight off the catwalk. There are apps, you see something and can order it straight away. Also I'd say fashion has become very tailored to the individual. People don't want to go into shops and buy what they're told to buy. Brands know this very well, so now you can go online and, for example, design your own trainers that are totally unique to you. It won't be long before all clothes come this way. You create your look virtually, and then maybe even 3D print it at home! Amazing. Although I am scared to think what Murdoc would do with this technology.

Your past is still like a mystery. Have you ever found out who your biological parents are? Do you find yourself having an identity crisis?
We are defined by what we do, not by where we come from. I try to be true to this idea, every day. This way, I am very certain of who I am. And while I have no knowledge of my parents, I believe we both carry a part of each other in our hearts.

You have just been appointed as the image ambassador of Jaguar Racing Team. Can you tell us about this cooperation project? What is your mission?
I've always been interested in things like physics, mathematics, and future technologies that can make cars go faster. I also like our planet, and that's why I agreed to support Jaguar Formula E - it's the first motorsport to race electric cars. But mainly, I am hoping my role will help inspire more women to get involved with engineering and racing.

As a female with an adventurous background, and participating in a male dominated music world, how do you work on women empowerment and equality issues? What's your advice for today's women?
My advice is to believe in yourself, and channel whatever makes you strong. Don't let people make you feel small. Even if you are small, like me. And if anyone tries to knock you down, I recommend jiu-jitsu.

What is your motto? And what can't you live without?
There is an expression: “If you never enter the tiger's den, you will not catch its cub." It sounds better in Japanese. Although I don't want to catch a tiger cub… well, maybe just to play with for a little while. This motto really means 'nothing ventured, nothing gained’. To not be afraid to try, I guess. What can I not live without? Air and water, steaming soba fish soup, magic, music, love and creativity.

If you could change the world, what change would you make?
People who post photos of their food. In fact, nobody cares about what you eat, just focus on eating.
