O Green World
Don't desert me now

O Green World is the fourth track from Gorillaz' second studio album, Demon Days.

Background & Recording[]

Described as a nod to Bernard HermannW's atonal string score for PsychoW, this song is the sound of "a train going off its rails. The march of the madmen". The distorted megaphone effect on 2D's vocals gives them a sense of a past memory, "like some old vaudeville track".[1]

The words are a reminder to keep a little greenery in your heart or you may forget what you were fighting for in the first place. And that really is the domain of the undead.
~ Noodle

The background sounds of paranormal spirits on the track were caught on tape by accident and initially discouraged the band from including it on the album.[2]

Lyrics[]

O Green World
Don't desert me now
Bring me back to a fallen town
Where someone is still alive

An icon soul
Something new in this
Where no one needs to haunt me
And I'm looking out to somewhere I've never been before

O Green World
Don't desert me now
Made of you and you of me
But where are we?
Oh no,[3] sells to lie
From the darkest stars that force you
Down when you’re in first
Does it seem so little to you?
I know you now
I know you know me too
You know me too
I Hope, sex and drugs thrust into myself, holy
It feels holy
It’s fun when you’re the father in the place you were

  • The song and video features the sounds of Murdoc's pet raven, Cortez.[1]
  • The title of the song is written as "O Green World" rather than "Oh Green World" as it's meant to spell "Ogre" (O Green World).
  • At some point before its release, this track was simply titled "Green World".[4]
