Jazz singer Betty CarterW recognized his talent and took him into her band, in which the young musician worked for the next 4 years.

In the mid-90s, Peven toured with trumpeter Wynton MarsalisW and saxophonist Branford MarsalisW. In 1996, Peven recorded the collaborative tracks GabrielW and Watch Them Come with Roy Davis Jr.W, which helped usher the UK garage music scene.

In 2008, Peven was voted the best R&B artist in Chicago by the readers of the Chicago ReaderW.

In 2024, Peven was diagnosed with lung cancer and is currently undergoing treatment. A GoFundMe has been set up by fellow Gorillaz collaborator and friend Bootie Brown to help cover the costs.[1]
