This article is about the model island teasers. For other uses, see Plastic Beach (disambiguation). |
The Plastic Beach Teasers were a series of short videos filmed and released in January 2010 to promote Gorillaz' third studio album, Plastic Beach. They were released across Gorillaz' multiple social media and streaming platforms from the 19th to the 31st of January.
Information[]
The teasers showcased the model island, featured on the cover for the album and many other works from Phase Three. They also feature un-released songs not included on the final album.
The original uploads were available on Gorillaz' official YouTube channel before being taken down when promotion for the album was no longer necessary. Some of them are still available on Gorillaz' Facebook account and EMI Music Germany's YouTube account.
Reflection[]
Reflection was the first teaser of the model island released. It consists of a side view of the island with wave effects applied to it. It was uploaded to Gorillaz' official YouTube channel on the 19th of January.
A snippet of the song Whirlwind, featuring The Syrian National Orchestra For Arabic Music, plays in the background of the teaser.
The model island in this teaser is notably painted light brown with a purple top instead of the usual pink with a green top. It is likely that this teaser was filmed either before the decision of going with the pink and green colors for the island or that the light brown and purple colors were simply an undercoat of paint before it was finished.
Big Fog[]
The Big Fog teaser shows the Plastic Beach island covered in a dense fog, while slowly approaching the pier and shore. It was uploaded to Gorillaz' official YouTube channel on the 20th of January.
An extended snippet of the song No Service Here plays in the background of the teaser. It is also the longest of all the teasers, with a length of 2:35.
Bird's Eye Island[]
The Bird's Eye Island teaser shows a rotating aerial view of the Plastic Beach island during the day. It was uploaded to Gorillaz' official YouTube channel on the 30th of January.
A snippet of the song Sick Parrot plays in the background of the teaser.
Night Time Lighthouse[]
The Night Time Lighthouse teaser, also shortened to Night Lighthouse, shows footage of the island's lighthouse during the night. It was uploaded to Gorillaz' official YouTube channel on the 29th of January.
A snippet of the song Omar Song, featuring Omar Souleyman, plays in the background of the teaser.
Night Time Pier Pan[]
The Night Time Pier Pan teaser, often shortened to Night Pier, shows footage of the entrance to the interior of the island, followed by the camera slowly shifting to the island's pier, also during the night. It was uploaded to Gorillaz' official YouTube channel on the 27th of January.
A snippet of the song Terry's Pier plays in the background of the teaser.
Orka Ripple[]
The Orka Ripple teaser showcases a boat named 'Orka' floating near the island as the ocean gently ripples. It was uploaded to Gorillaz' official YouTube channel on the 27th of January.
A snippet of the song Dancehall, an early alternate version of White Flag featuring The Syrian National Orchestra For Arabic Music, plays in the background of the teaser.
Pirate Radio[]
The Pirate Radio teaser features a buoy floating in the middle of the ocean with dense fog surrounding it. The camera then shifts to the lighthouse from the island, also surrounded by fog, with a pirate ship near it (likely the 'Glitter Freeze'). It was uploaded to Gorillaz' official YouTube channel on the 22nd of January.
A snippet of the song Sunday Monday plays in the background of the teaser.
Footage from this ident was also later used on the main menu for The Making Of Plastic Beach documentary DVD.
Plane Dock[]
The Plane Dock teaser features a landed aeroplane near the coast of the island. It was uploaded to Gorillaz' official YouTube channel on the 27th of January.
A snippet of the song Prawn Porn plays in the background of the teaser.
Subdive Dusk[]
The Subdive Dusk teaser shows a submarine near the coast of Plastic Beach slowly descending into the ocean. It was uploaded to Gorillaz' official YouTube channel on the 20th of January.
A snippet of the song song with the same name, featuring The Syrian National Orchestra For Arabic Music, plays in the background of the teaser.
Sub[]
The Sub teaser shows the same submarine from the 'Subdive Dusk' teaser diving in the ocean. It was uploaded to Gorillaz' official YouTube channel on the 22nd of January.
A snippet of the song Animation plays in the background of the teaser.
Sun Deck[]
The Sun Deck teaser shows an aerial view of the balcony from the studio building from Plastic Beach, with Murdoc sunbathing in his underwear. It was uploaded to Gorillaz' official YouTube channel on the 29th of January.
A snippet of the song Mr. Light plays in the background of the teaser.
Footage from this ident was also later used on the subtitles menu for The Making Of Plastic Beach documentary DVD.
Underwater Rotate[]
The Underwater Rotate teaser shows footage of the underwater portion of Plastic Beach, rotating around the island. It was uploaded to Gorillaz' official YouTube channel on the 22nd of January.
A snippet of the song Sea Of Beauty, featuring keyboards by Jesse Hackett, plays in the background of the teaser.
Point Nemo Trailer[]
The Point Nemo trailer was released separately from the other teasers, on the Spinner.comW website around the 3rd of February, in promotion of Murdoc's 'Pirate Radio' show, also hosted there. It shows footage of the lighthouse from Plastic Beach covered in fog illuminating the surrounding areas.
A snippet of Murdoc's narration from the first episode of the 'Pirate Radio' series is featured on the trailer. In the background of the teaser, a non-Gorillaz song plays, specifically the song Neptune, The Mystic from the opera The Planets, composed by Gustav HolstW and recorded by the SWR Vokalensemble StuttgartW. It can be heard in full here.
Fog Lighthouse[]
In 2010, a promotional compilation CD made by Chrysalis Music GroupW, titled Chrysalis Music 2010 Coachella, was released to promote the artists from their company that were part of the lineup for the Coachella Festival 2010W, which included Gorillaz. The tracks by Gorillaz included on this compilation were the snippets of the ones previously featured on the Plastic Beach teasers, with the exception of one, titled Fog Lighthouse (named Sea Bacon on the ASCAP Repertory), which had the same length as the Point Nemo trailer for Murdoc's 'Pirate Radio' show.
It is speculated that Fog Lighthouse was the original title for the teaser featuring the song Sea Bacon that was repurposed into the trailer for the Pirate Radio show, likely due to a lack of additional footage to use for it. It is also possible that the titles for the Pirate Radio and Fog Lighthouse teasers were swapped when both videos were released, as not only does the Pirate Radio teaser (as it is called) feature the island's lighthouse covered in dense fog (matching the title of Fog Lighthouse), but the Point Nemo trailer also includes narration from Murdoc's 'Pirate Radio' show (matching the title of the Pirate Radio teaser).
