Punk is the seventh track on Gorillaz' 2001 album "Gorillaz".
Recording[]
Real Life Backstory[]
Co-Creator Damon Albarn created Punk the way he did along with a handful of other tracks in Gorillaz's debut album. The song was an attempt to experiment on what the Gorillaz sound was going to be. Damon played every instrument on the track except the drums, which was played by David Rowntree.
Virtual Band Backstory[]
According to Russel Hobbs, the song was originally over an hour long but he wanted something short and snappy so it was cut down to the simple minute-long version. The track was used on the album because it was the one which got Gorillaz signed to record their album. It was completely recorded in Essex, before the band left to Jamaica where they would record the rest of the songs.Noodle used a Gibson six-string guitar to play, while Murdoc got the claps used in the song by taking his DAT player to the local Essex Bowling club and making the old people in there to clap along, then paid them in boiled sweets.2-D had been looking for his front door keys for ages, but eventually lost it big time and threw a fit, causing his angered tone in the song which Murdoc claims he liked because it sounded as if 2-D had gone a bit mental. 2-D was screaming the lyrics and after he finished, he walked away frustrated out of the studio.[1]

Lyrics[]
Ooooow!
Oooohahh!
Try to see myself what goes on.
Make it up myself, I'll never.
Always told my thoughts aloud,
Then another day I shut up.
Back to the sand,
Doing what you can.
Bound to be gone,
Damned a loser.
Found out right then they were fed up,
Cause everybody said to shut up.
Yeah!
Thought you might care what goes on.
Try to say "what up?"; i'm fed up.
Everybody said to shut up,
The last time I told them "what up?"
Down with the sun,
I knew that I was done.
Did it to myself,
Did it to myself, and then.
All this time I said I've been fed up
Cause everybody tells me "shut up".
