Re-Hash is the first track from Gorillaz' self-titled debut album. It is described in Rise of the Ogre as 'a gloriously upbeat opener to the album'.
Background and Recording[]
The song was written by 2-D and Murdoc. Murdoc wrote random phrases on magnets and 2-D threw them at a fridge. They kept whatever phrases stuck in the refrigerator.
2-D was coached by Damon Albarn to sing more confidently in this track and, as stated by Russel Hobbs, 'lose the thin reedy sound of the early rehearsals'.
Backing vocals were provided by Noodle as well as Cibo Matto's Miho Hatori.
For the bass sound, Murdoc placed his amp underwater, in a fish tank on the floor above. Then they held a microphone up to the ceiling below and recorded the bassline. As he stated, that's why the bass in "Re-Hash" is 'all muffled and well dubby'.
2-D added a broken sitar sound to the track to give it that 'extra dash of weirdness' and other things like moog bleeps, theremins, extra backing vocals, dubby delays and deep sub-bass sonar noises.
Murdoc walked to a school playground, rounded up some children with a lasso and bullied them to sing on it.
Kid Koala assisted Russel Hobbs with the decks.[1]
Lyrics[]
[2-D & Noodle]
It's a sweet sensation over the dub
A one-off situation that don't wanna stop
It's the drugstore soul boy over the dub
With the sweetest inspiration, he don't wanna stop
Cause' it's the money or stop,
It's the money, or stop (Yeah yeah)
It's the money, or stop
It's the money, or stop
It's the money, or stop
It's the money, or stop
It's the money, or stop
It's the money, or stop
(It's, yeah) It's the money, or stop...
It's a sweet sensation over the dub
A one-off situation that don't wanna stop
It's the drugstore soul boy over the dub
With the sweetest inspiration, he don't wanna stop
Cause' it's the money or stop,
It's the money, or stop (Yeah yeah)
It's the money, or stop
It's the money, or stop
It's the money, or stop
It's the money, or stop
It's the money, or stop
It's the money, or stop
(It's, yeah) It's the money, or stop...

Trivia[]
- The biggest point of debate with the song is the chorus, where some interpretations have it as saying "It's the money as dub" due to the word appearing in the verse earlier. Another interpretation is "It's the money or stuff" due to a second layer of vocals that make a F-sound at the end of the line.
- During Phase One, on the Kong Studios website, there was a mixer game named "5-Track", which allowed the player to remix Re-Hash using many stems and samples from the song.
- Re-Hash was also featured as a DLC for the videogame Rock Band along with the single Clint Eastwood.
- The Spacemonkeyz' remix of the song from Laika Come Home is named Come Again.
