Richie Stevens is a musician, drummer and member of the virtual band Spacemonkeyz, there known under the name Dubversive.
Role in Gorillaz[]
Richie Stevens formed a virtual band Spacemonkeyz with Darren Galea and Gavin Dodds after Damon Albarn liked Galea's remix Tomorrow Dub so much that he asked him to remix the whole Gorillaz album. On the 1st of July, 2002, Spacemonkeyz released the remix album Laika Come Home. There, Tomorrow Dub was re-worked and re-named into the track Bañana Baby. The album's only single Lil' Dub Chefin' reached #73 on the UK Singles Chart. Later, in 2005, Stevens once again worked on Gorillaz material with Darren Galea and Stuart Zender (who provided the bass and clavinet on Laika Come Home), co-mixing the Chopper Remix of the song Dirty Harry, released as a B-side track to its single release.
Musical Career[]
Richie Stevens is a son of John Stevens, a known Jazz drummer. He innitially started drumming as well and by his twenties, Richie's musical passion resided with reggae music. Over time he started producing numerous regge works. He formed the virtual band Spacemonkeyz with fellow music producers Darren Galea and Gavin Dodds and released the album Laika Come Home, which became one of his most known works. Richie began creating his own debut album around 2012. This project, an album entitled Smudge All Stars, was released in 2020 and featured many reggae artists, some of whom he had previously worked with such as Earl Sixteen. [1]
