The Sarm Studios Session, also known as Demon Detour Session and Live on Demon Detour, originally, was a live recording session by Gorillaz which took place at Sarm West Studios, London, from the 21st to the 23rd of May 2005 for the Demon Detour, a virtual radio tour held by the band in promotion of their second studio album, Demon Days. The songs rehearsed during this session were featured on a promo compilation EP titled Live Tracks shortly after.

Information[]

The promo CD for the live session was distributed at 46 different radio stations across the US during June 2005 to be played as part of the Demon Detour.

The songs rehearsed during this session were as follows: Last Living Souls, Kids With Guns, Dirty Harry, Feel Good Inc., El Mañana, All Alone, DARE and Clint Eastwood. Seven of them originate from Demon Days, meanwhile Clint Eastwood is an alternate version with De La Soul and Bootie Brown of the original song from the band's self-titled debut album). The track listing from the promo CD follows an alphabetical order, while the radio broadcast followed the order of the songs on Demon Days with Clint Eastwood being often played last.

Trivia[]

  • The live tracks from the Sarm Studios Session were also played during an interview with Damon Albarn, Jamie Hewlett and Danger Mouse at the Zane Lowe Show on BBC Radio 1 on the 7th of September 2005.
  • Information about the recording process of the tracks from this occasion was described in the Gorillaz autobiography Rise Of The Ogre.[1]
    • According to the band, they began to receive "odd phone calls, disturbing messages and eventually blatant death threats" once they initially arrived at Sarm West Studios.
    • The intent of the session, according to Rise Of The Ogre, was to rehearse and record the songs for quality control
  • Portions of these sessions later appeared on the 2008 documentary Bananaz.
  • On certain radio broadcasts of the tour, De La Soul and Bootie Brown's version of Clint Eastwood was played before the Demon Days setlist instead of after it.
  • Some of the recordings went on to be featured on other later releases by the band. Clint Eastwood was included as a b-side track to DARE (single and EP Series formats); All Alone as a b-side to Dirty Harry and Feel Good Inc. on the compilation album End Sessions Volume 4 as well as on the Amazon MP3 Store version of D-Sides.
  • The Sarm Studios Session was the first of two live extended plays released by Gorillaz, the second one being the iTunes Session in 2010.
